Sustainable Fishery

The Alaska pollock fishery is one of the most consistently productive and stable fisheries in the world, due to the federal management system that has been regulating the fishery for over 30 years. For this reason, the Alaska pollock fishery is regarded as a model around the world for ecosystem-based sustainable fisheries management.

As school administrators, students, and parents become more interested in sustainability, you can rest assured that Alaska pollock is a responsible environmental choice. In 2005, after more than four years of extensive evaluation, the Alaska pollock fishery was certified as sustainable to the standards set by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for a well-managed sustainable fishery. This international organization, co-founded by the World Wildlife Fund, uses independent third-party certifiers to evaluate fisheries

according to international standards of sustainability. In addition, the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions, a group of 15 environmental groups concerned about seafood sustainability, has recognized the MSC program as credible and fully consistent with international guidelines. This group, which includes organizations such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, National Resources Defense Council, Blue Ocean Institute, the New England Aquarium and World Wildlife Fund, encourages businesses to purchase MSC-certified products as part of their sustainable seafood policies.
